Go to sleep

Lullaby

Since this is a lullaby challenge, here’s a song about insomnia!

This is a bit messy, my midi controller was supposed to arrive yesterday but alas has been delayed in the mail; I’m hoping to mix it up a little more on the next challenge and start utilizing different sounds

As for the parameter to use a melody from a song that came out the year I was born (1993), I’ve incorporated it with the vocal melody beginning with “what would it be like?” – although in a different key, the vocal melody is from A Whole New World from Aladdin (the film came out in 1992 but the soundtrack was released 1993, that counts right?)

Lyrics –

go to sleep

you know you need it

you’ve been up

3 whole days

wired and tired

fight or flight

when will this be over

should I give up the fight

I’ve been up all night

What would it be like

to live without fear

(fight or flight)?

If I could lie awake

without the hate

I’d already be dreaming

Looking for feedback on

anything and everything

This would make such a dope first track of an album.

Girl you’re not just an opera singer you’re a straight up soul/blues singer.
I love the intro dip “Ahhhhhhh”

Is it weird that I hear an accordion fully supporting you behind this?
Really awesome submission!!

This lilting, incessant phrasing is fresh and inspiring. Makes me want to try writing something with this intensity of motion, even though I don’t know what the heck would happen:) I’ve enjoyed all three of your pieces so far, and I think this one hooked me the most immediately.

From the little bit of music (three submissions) I’ve heard from you, I’m so excited by your trajectory. You have a musical boldness and freedom and fluidity, and you’re at the beginning of your recording/mixing journey. I would only affirm your thought to keep experimenting with your techniques. There is so much to utilize in these recording softwares that it can be overwhelming, and very easy to stick with what you know. Watch a few random youtube tutorials on Logic, try a few new sounds. This is long-term advice, but I’m just excited by your position, and can’t help myself. Looking forward to all the new music ahead.

Thank you so much! You’re right I definitely need to delve more into learning logic, I will start checkin out some youtube videos! I really want to expand the sounds I’m working with, my original plan for this song was to incorporate/feature mellotron sounds, but my midi controller hasn’t arrived yet. Thank you so much for your encouragement and advice!

Is there a cool sneaky synth at 0:10 in, or are those ghost notes coming from the guitar? Very cool. Agree with Ryan about the final three lines. Learning the melody there is “A Whole New World” is such a trip — it’s crazy how context is everything when it comes to melodies. But learning that makes me like the final line even more (“say we’re only dreaming” / “I’d already be dreaming”). The lyrics to the songs you’ve posted so far have a raw, stream-of-conscious quality; they’re an honest, organic conversation you’re having with yourself, there’s always a give-and-take, a very real sense of inner conflict comes through, and I wouldn’t want your songs to lose that characteristic – but I would love to see you incorporate some more imagery or some unusual/unexpected words into your tunes. I’m thinking of the word “medication” in your previous submission and how unexpected and cool that was.

The sound you’re hearing is a chord I played on guitar that I put an affect on to sound more synth-like, in my attempt to get some variety in the music; love your advice about wording/lyrics, I will definitely take that into consideration for the next challenge!

As always, you put your voice on display so confidently—a boldness I could *certainly* learn from haha. I don’t want you to lose that, because your voice is beautiful—but I would love to hear you allow the instrumentation to hug your voice just a bit more. I think it would illuminate more of the atmosphere and therefore provide a fuller picture of what you’re expressing—would maybe even influence your writing. That’s not perfectly articulated, but hopefully you know what I mean haha. Oh also—very much enjoyed the lyrics. Especially that last trio. Well done.

Thank you! I fully agree with you about the instrumentation; I should have a keyboard and a midi controller arriving this week which I think will make it a lot easier for me to get some more instrumentation and more variety of sounds goin, I’m so limited on guitar. This is great advice that I will definitely follow!
