Murder at the Motel

Meteor Shower at the Motel

Slapped this bad boy together pretty quickly because I was short on time — my main regret is that I didn’t get to any vocals/lyrics but hopefully you get the motel vibes from this one.

One of the first things I’ve made in my home studio since I moved, so a lot of this was making sure I had all my toys set up properly haha.

Ears are pretty burnt from working on the new Lawrence record, but I spend plenty of time walking home at night from the studio so I definitely nailed that parameter.  Also I think the cascading melody thing fit into this pretty nicely.  Wish I had time for some words to REALLY put you in the mood, but hopefully y’all don’t feel like I skimped on that last parameter.

Hope y’all enjoy it!

As always, a total hit. Love the sound of those keys – so satisfying when that trashy bass comes in.

Also those ambient sounds are creepy af.

This is a sleeper slapper. Was not expecting that haha! No notes from me, production is on point and I love the build and imagery.

The rabbit is back, munch munch. This mix is so luscious. Agreed with @@nick on the buttery toms. Wish I knew how to make things sound like that.

I wouldn’t mind waiting on that snare until 1:37. Would that work? Tough to say, but boy do I want to try.

I’m glad you asked I actually had it that way for most of the time I was working on this and flipped at the last second to be earlier. It’s right on the line because once you get the dirty top of that synth bass the song is kind of asking for that snare, but it is sweet to get it right on that drop.

those first 40 seconds when i something is about DROP and i cant wait. Love the dirrty synth bass. such a great and simple drum fill then dropout. Also just a really solid chord progression in general. This song needs a sequel because right now the killer is still on the loose. He got away! Into the night.

Thanks!! He did indeed get away 😬 but I can’t guarantee he’ll be caught in the sequel.

oh man those toms are so buttery and plump. where do they come from? i suddenly want to know everything about how this got created. the mix is stellar ;). drum fill is completely lit. there are few things as obvious in the world as the fact that is song is about a murder at a motel. thanks for submitting.

Thanks my man — those toms are created from a few samples combined. Mainly I grabbed some samples I had from the kit at 707 and beefed them up with some drum machine toms from the “Samples from Mars” people. Ultimately the layering of different samples at different levels across the groove with some buss processing to gel them together gives them a little life and makes them feel less fake

woweeee this rocks. so many awesome moments – the drum fill, the bass, the little descending pitch thing near the end. this motel is a sweaty grungy night club in all the vacant rooms.

just wanted to come back and say that the little drop at 1:37 is perfect.
